Here are a couple of videos about using a WaterPik. The first one is funny; the second one is instructional:
It is often said that oral irrigators are an alternative to flossing. However, most dentists and periodontists agree that flossing is necessary to achieve total gum health. An oral irrigator is an excellent tool for removing food debris and massaging gums. It can also remove some bacteria and plaque below the gumline and massage the gums. However, it should never totally replace flossing. You should still floss every day -- or if you can't do that, then floss at least a few times per week.
When you first get braces, flossing can be almost impossible for the first few weeks. In that case, using an oral irrigator can help keep your gums healthy. But as soon as you can manage to floss, you should resume doing so. Then you can use the oral irrigator to help remove debris from around your braces and provide additional gum support.
My family has been using the Waterpik since it was invented! One of my first memories as a small child was watching my father use his Waterpik!
